Tucked into the village of Selo, a long beautiful walk or a short drive from Bled, this fascinating countryside buzzing with fans of the apicultural arts. Local beekeeper Blaž Ambrožič has built an apiary (freestanding house of beehives) and teaches visitors all about his very Slovenian form of agriculture. First you’ll see the painted panels with bees buzzing in and out. Blaž’s prize possession is a gigantic Winnie-the-Pooh-style hive that he transplanted from a tree trunk. He’ll demonstrate how you can hold your hand within inches of the buzzing hive without getting stung, thanks to the peaceful nature of the indigenous Carnolian bee. Inside, you can watch through a big (and safe) window as Blaž pulls out the honeycomb frames from the hive and works with his bees. You can sample (and buy) different types of honey, along with other bee related gifts. Outside is a perennial garden that demonstrates when various plants blossom, providing much-needed pollen for the bees.
We have tours for groups and families. Call or email us one day ahead to arrange the visiting time.
Demonstrations usually last an hour or more and may even run just for two people.
I am one of the visitors on this tour (in the orange jacket) and I enjoyed the visit so much! Thank you for the wonderful introduction to your apiary and educational experience we had there! Thank you for the welcome package you had for us, the honey and homemade cookies were a special treat. I love all of the honey I bought! The painting on beehive fronts is something I had never seen before. Our group had a wonderful experience that day! Thank you so much!
